External Wall Insulation (EWI) – What You Need for a Complete System

External wall insulation is a complete system, not just insulation boards and render. Getting each layer right matters – from the adhesive and fixings through to the reinforcing mesh, primer and final finish.

What makes up a complete EWI system?

A properly installed external wall insulation system is made up of several components designed to work together. It normally includes insulation boards, adhesive, mechanical fixings, reinforcing mesh and base coat, primer and the final decorative render.

Using compatible products as part of one complete system is important. Each layer has a specific job – from securing the insulation and reinforcing the surface to protecting the building from weather and providing the final finish.

Insulation Boards

The insulation boards form the main thermal layer of the EWI system. EPS is one of the most commonly used options, with the thickness selected according to the property and required thermal performance.

Correct preparation and installation are just as important as the insulation itself. Boards should be fitted tightly and evenly to create a stable base for the reinforcing and finishing layers.

Adhesive and mechanical fixings

EWI boards are normally bonded to the prepared substrate using a suitable system adhesive and additionally secured with mechanical fixings. The correct type and number of fixings will depend on the substrate, insulation system and project requirements.

These components provide the secure foundation for the rest of the system, so they should always be selected to work with the insulation and other system components.

Reinforcing mesh and base coat

Once the insulation boards are securely fixed, a reinforced base coat is applied. Fibreglass mesh is embedded into the base coat to strengthen the surface and help distribute stresses across the facade.

Correct application, including proper mesh overlaps and additional reinforcement around corners and openings, helps create a strong and stable surface ready for the finishing layers.

Primer

Primer prepares the reinforced base coat for the final render. It helps regulate the absorbency of the surface, improves adhesion and provides a consistent base for the decorative finish.

The primer should be compatible with the selected render and applied according to the requirements of the complete system.

Final Render

The final render is the visible protective layer of the EWI system. It gives the façade its finished appearance while also helping protect the layers underneath from weather and everyday exposure.

Silicone render is a popular choice because of its durability, flexibility and resistance to water and dirt. Different textures and a wide range of colours allow the finish to be matched to both modern and traditional properties.
